Introduction: A Country in Medical Freefall
The Yemen healthcare crisis has become one of the most devastating medical emergencies in the world today. Years of war, economic collapse, and aid restrictions have pushed hospitals to the brink of shutdown. In Yemen, even a minor illness can become fatal due to a lack of doctors, medicine, and equipment.
At UMMA Foundation, we are working to deliver life-saving care to some of the most vulnerable families in the country. But with so many challenges, every day counts.
In this article, we’ll explore:
- Why Yemen’s hospitals are failing
- The spread of disease and malnutrition
- UMMA Foundation’s medical response
- Stories from real patients we’ve helped
How you can make a life-saving difference
Hospitals in Collapse: What’s Gone Wrong
Non-Functional Facilities
Over 50% of Yemen’s health facilities are either destroyed, damaged, or non-operational. Many hospitals lack electricity, clean water, and functioning equipment.
Doctors Without Pay
Most medical staff have not been paid for months. Many doctors, nurses, and technicians continue to serve their communities purely out of duty, despite the personal risk and financial hardship.
Lack of Medical Supplies
From basic antibiotics to surgical tools, Yemen’s hospitals are running out of everything. Even oxygen tanks and IV fluids are scarce in many areas. For the critically ill, this can mean the difference between life and death.
📌 Fact: In many rural areas, patients must walk for hours to reach a clinic—only to find there is no doctor, no medicine, and no help
.
The Spread of Disease and Malnutrition
Cholera and Waterborne Illnesses
Yemen has faced one of the largest modern outbreaks of cholera, with hundreds of thousands infected. Dirty water and poor sanitation make it nearly impossible to contain.
Malnutrition Weakens the Immune System
Over 2 million children are acutely malnourished. Their weakened immune systems make them easy targets for infections like dengue, measles, and pneumonia.
Mothers at Risk
Pregnant women often give birth in unsafe conditions. Many die from complications that could be prevented with basic care. Others lose their children due to a lack of neonatal equipment or antibiotics.
UMMA’s Medical Response in Yemen
At UMMA Foundation, we’ve focused our efforts on providing practical, mobile, and immediate healthcare solutions:
Mobile Clinics in Remote Areas
We deploy mobile medical teams equipped with essential supplies to reach displaced families in camps and rural communities. These clinics offer primary care, vaccinations, prenatal support, and emergency referrals.
Medicine Delivery
UMMA delivers life-saving medications to under-resourced hospitals and clinics. This includes antibiotics, painkillers, nutritional supplements, IV fluids, and surgical tools.
Nutritional Therapy for Children
We provide therapeutic food packs to severely malnourished children. These treatments can save a child’s life in just a few weeks.
The Appeal: A Real Patient Story from Yemen
The Struggles of One Family in Mukalla
Dear brothers,
We present to you the story of a family struggling with financial difficulties and harsh conditions. This family lives in the city of Mukalla, Hadhramaut Governorate. They are a poor family with four children. Unfortunately, they have been afflicted with hernias. One of the children underwent surgery at Ibn Sina Hospital, but tragically, he passed away during the operation due to an overdose of anesthesia. Another child later passed away due to complications.
Currently, the family has a third child, approximately one and a half years old, and a daughter, six years old, who both urgently need surgery. If the operation is delayed, the daughter may lose her ovary, which would prevent her from being able to conceive in the future.
Alhamdulillah, the surgery for the first child in Yemen was successful, thanks to your generous contributions.
The mother, however, refused to proceed with surgery for the second child at the same time because she feared losing both children during the procedure, given the earlier tragedy when they lost their first child.
We will soon proceed with the second operation, InshaAllah.
May Allah reward you all for your continued support and kindness.
These are the stories behind every donation. Each child treated, every family comforted, is a direct result of your compassion.
Umma Foundation’s Response: Saving Lives on the Ground in Yemen
In the city of Taiz, a family of six was facing unimaginable hardship. The father, injured in an airstrike, could no longer work. Two of the children suffered from malnutrition and hernias, and the family had no access to hospitals, clean water, or even bread.
When this story reached Umma Foundation, our Yemen team mobilized immediately.
With your donations, we were able to:
- Provide emergency medical aid for both children
- Arrange life-saving surgery for the eldest son
- Deliver food packs and fresh bread for the family
- Offer continued nutritional support and hygiene kits
Sadly, one of the children passed away before we could reach them—but thanks to your support, the other two are now stable, recovering, and receiving ongoing care.
“Without Umma, I would have lost all of them.”
